Buckhorn Recreation Area – Where the Back Roads Lead to Great Company

️ The Destination

Buckhorn Recreation Area sits tucked in the western foothills of Mendocino National Forest near the tiny town of Stonyford — and it's an absolute gem of a California campground. Surrounded by oak woodlands, rolling chaparral, and the rugged terrain of the inner Coast Range, this spot offers that perfect mix of seclusion and accessibility that makes for an unforgettable club weekend.

We have the campground for two nights — Friday through Sunday — so come early, settle in, and let the weekend unfold at your pace. Nearby Elk Creek and Stonyford are small, quiet communities that give the area its unhurried, off-the-beaten-path character — exactly the kind of place you want to gather with fellow club members around a campfire under a sky full of stars.

️ The Club Ride

The organized club ride departs on Saturday, April 25, kicking off at the Black Bear Diner – Napa for a hearty breakfast at 8:00 AM, with kickstands up at 9:00 AM sharp. From Napa we leave the highway behind and dive into scenic, twisty back roads heading north — the kind of riding that makes you glad you own a BMW.

The route winds through the valley towns of Esparto and Rumsey before crossing into the Sacramento Valley through Colusa. We'll stretch our legs at a rest stop in Esparta, then roll into Willows for lunch at Nancy's Airport Cafe — a classic roadside stop with a Walmart right across the street if you need to grab any last-minute provisions for camp. From Willows it's a satisfying 60-mile run through Elk Creek and up into the hills to Buckhorn, with an expected arrival at camp around 3:00 PM.

Route Highlights

• ✓ Breakfast: Black Bear Diner, Napa — 8:00 AM meet, 9:00 AM kickstands up
• ✓ Back Roads: Scenic, twisty routes out of Napa avoiding the highway entirely
• ✓ Rest Stop: Esparta — a chance to stretch and regroup mid-morning
• ✓ Lunch: Nancy's Airport Cafe, Willows — classic roadside eats, Walmart across the street for provisions
• ✓ Final Run: ~60 miles from Willows through Elk Creek up to Buckhorn Group Site
• ✓ Camp Arrival: ~3:00 PM Saturday

• Members: Registration opens March 15, 2026
• Initiates: Registration opens March 22, 2026

⚠️ Come Prepared

• ⛽ Full Tank: Show up to breakfast with a full tank of gas. Plan fuel stops along the route accordingly.
• ️ Know the Route: Review the route sheet and have a good knowledge of the day's roads before you roll out.
• Load Your GPX: Download and load the GPX files onto your device before the ride — don't rely on cell service in the hills.
• ️ Camp Provisions: Stock up at the Walmart in Willows during the lunch stop — it's your last easy resupply before camp.
• Liability Waiver: When you register, you will receive an email with a link to sign your liability waiver. Be sure to sign it as soon as you receive it. You will receive reminders to sign, and your registration will be cancelled if the waiver is not signed.
